Officer Geer Dishes Out the Details
Written by Julie Pawson (6th Grade Student) and Mrs. Herrgesell Wednesday, 18 November 2009 12:29
On October 22, 2009 Officer Geer came to Mrs. Herrgesell’s Language Arts classes where he gave all sixth grade students a lesson in descriptive writing. He gave a presentation using information from a homicide to illustrate to students the importance of writing in the real world. He gave students a picture to describe and write about and told them how important it is to include a lot of details when writing a police report. Officer Geer explained that if he doesn’t pay close attention to details when he writes up a report, the police may not be able to locate a suspect or eventually put the guilty person in prison. At the end of the presentation, two lucky students from each class were given something to feel while blindfolded and had to describe, in great detail, what they thought they were holding. It was either a tomato or a rubber tongue! The students learned that police officers do more than just fire a gun in the police academy; they also have to take a class on report writing before than can wear a badge and protect the public.
Thank you, Officer Geer, for sharing your time and expertise with GMS students!
