Family Fun at Engineering Night!

Children and parents all participated in an exciting night of experiments and activities.  The theme was Family Engineering night and some activities required the whole family to help solve and activate.  One activity was to design a roller coaster.  The trick was to get the “track” high enough to allow the “coaster” to go thru the double loop.  Another activity was to build a ship out of tinfoil  make it float then add up to  50 pennies before it sank.

The fun then turned to a group activity where the guest engineer, Doug Yearsley , had all participants see who could build the tallest tower with pipe cleaners.  The variables changed part way through and the families could not talk to each other to continue building.    With the ice cream sandwiches(from The United Dairy Council) as our snacks and the company of many families of all ages we enjoyed a short evening of fun and exciting events.

Third Grade Solar System Voyage

On behalf of the Education Foundation the 3rd graders had the opportunity to make a special “out of this world” trip to CSI’s Herrett Center.  Third grade enjoyed the time they were able to spend in the museum as well as the space voyage taken at the Faulkner Planetarium!  This trip allowed students to expand their knowledge and make connections to the Sun, Moon, and Planets unit that was being studied in reading.  Thank you Education Foundation!

Dr. Seuss Family Read Night

Blankets, cuddly animals, and kids in pajamas were strewn across the library floor for our pajama party for Family Read Night.  Thursday, March 7, over one hundred and forty children and parents enjoyed the rhythmic, beloved, tongue-twisting repetitive words and made-up phrases of Dr. Seuss.  Mrs. Miller welcomed guests by reading and sharing activities of the Foot Book.  Then, starting out with a single yawn from a small boy named Van Vleck and spreading across the land, children saw fantastical, nonsensical creatures going to sleep in distant lands.  As Mrs. Caldwell read the Sleep Book, children saw all those creatures on the screen.  But instead of going to sleep, they sat with their parents and read some more!!!  Children voted for their favorite Dr. Seuss book by piling a red or white stripe on top the Seuss hats’ graph on the wall.  The clear winner was Green Eggs and Ham!  Prizes, ranging from books to blankets to posters and pencils, went home with each child.  As the children left, they took with them homemade cookies and the milk that the Idaho Dairymen donated.  If you missed our Family Read Night, borrow The Sleep Book by Dr. Seuss and join “the ninety-nine zillion, nine trillion and three Seussian creatures who are going to sleep.”  Remember this book is to be read in bed!

4th Grade Science Fair Was a Hit!

The 4th grade recently completed their reading unit titled Science Fair.  Students celebrated the closing of the unit with a science fair of their own.  All students in the 4th grade were assigned a topic and from there the scientific inquiries started.  The students worked in pairs or small groups over a 6 week period collecting data, performing experiments, and analyzing their results.  When all the work was done the students presented to their 4th grade peers, as well as parents who came along too.  The students learned so much from their projects and one another.  The 4th grade teachers were proud to present Charlotte Brockman, Waycee Irish, and Ellie Stockham with the 1st place prize.
