Gooding High School Reading Club sponsored a promotional activity for Teen Tech Week. We taught students a about new, free photograph editing program called GIMP. Two Reading Club members, JoAnna Jensen and Lizzy Bellamy, learned the program during the Teen Tech Librarian’s Workshop (held at Gooding High School in February and sponsored by the Idaho Commission for Libraries). They helped other students create designs for bookmarks, magnets and posters. We worked with Cindy Bigler and Gooding Public Library.
Every participant received a wrist band jump drive. In addition, the winner in each category received a gift certificate for a free book at the next Book Fair. Winners were as follows: Summer Reading Bookmark: Hannah Hurd; Reading Promotion Bookmark: Lizzy Bellamy; Summer Reading Magnet: Cynara Prince; Library Promotion Magnet: Jennalee McCool; Poster: Jackie Bellamy; and Best Design Overall: Jackie Bellamy. You can find samples of their work at either GHS Library or Gooding Public Library.
Teen Tech Week is a national initiative sponsored by the Young Adult Library Services Association, a division of the American Library Association, and is aimed at teens, their parents, and educators. The purpose of the initiative is to ensure that teens are competent and ethical users of technologies. The theme this year was Geek Out @ Your Library.
